At Pool Hayes Primary, Art and Design is a subject that we celebrate and enjoy across the school.
Intent
At Pool Hayes Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. Art and Design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high quality art and design education will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of Art and Design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design. They should also know how Art and Design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Pool Hayes Primary is based on the National Curriculum and linked (where possible) to topics to ensure a well-structured approach to this creative subject. Using Plan Bee, we have given staff a framework from which to teach sequential and progressive skills across year groups. The children are taught Art and Design termly, covering topics including; Pop art, pointillism, plant art, architecture and drawing skills. The work of famous artists are explored and learning is further enhanced within ‘Inspire Workshops’ whereby we invite family members into school. We hold termly Art and Design competitions; incorporating competitions run within the community as well as within our school. We also get excited about the annual ‘Art Exhibition’ at the end of the year, offering our children further opportunities for collaborative work; exploring the different styles and techniques of a range of artists covered within their previous units of work.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, EAD (Exploring Art and Design) is broken down into two aspects:
• Exploring and Using Media and Materials
• Being Imaginative.
Pupils will explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities.
According to the National Curriculum, Key stage 1 pupils should be taught to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products, to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination, to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. They should learn about a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.
Pupils in Key Stage 2 should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. They should create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas, To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay and learn about great artists, architects and designers in history.
Impact
Art and Design enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. Instilling in our children a sense of accomplishment and achievement, while offering opportunities to celebrate art throughout the school.
Progression in Art will be assessed through work completed in pupils’ sketchbooks, displays, photographic evidence and recorded termly on DCPRO. Art and Design is also monitored by the subject leader throughout the year in the form of book monitoring, pupil voice (to discuss their learning and understanding and establish the impact of the teaching taking place), professional feedback and staff meetings.
